    The Search for Planet X

    The search for a massive planet, from 2 – 10 Earth masses, has never stopped. The discovery of Sedna and later of Eris by Michael Brown and his team, not only would prompt the redefinition of what a planet is, but it would also be a key factor in the search for Planet X.

    The discovery of 2012 VP113 in early 2014 by Scott Sheppard and Chad Trujillo supports and extends the current theories that propose the presence of another planet in the outer Solar System. 2012 VP113 [nicknamed Biden] lies at 80 Astronomical Units perihelion and 445 Astronomical Units aphelion.

These scientists had postulated that it was a collision caused by the impact of a large asteroid that brough the last Ice Age to its end. However, an impact crater had not been found until now…..

    Planet Mars with Clouds Animation

     

    Everyone seems obsessed with Mars and how to get us there these days. How would the Red Planet look if it had clouds? Well, recently the Hubble Space Telescope team released a photograph of Mars with clouds. The image showed Mars in a more Earthly fashion than we have seen it before.

    The following is an animation of the red planet, Mars, with Earth-like clouds in its atmosphere. The global mapping was taken from Viking’s imagery and the clouds were adjusted from an image of Earth’s clouds by NASA.

    Alarming, Ice Shelf Melting

    Larsen B Ice Shelf Is Melting – NASA

    Ala Khazendar, science research JPL, has presented a study that affirms the remainder of Larsen B Ice Shelf in Antarctica will met in the next few years. If that happens, glaciers would freely float on the ocean, says Khazendar. In 2002, grand part of Larsen B collapsed and broke off from Antarctica in less than six weeks.

    Khazendar and his colleague, Eric Rignot, think that two of the three glaciers that are located at the Antarctica Peninsula are in danger of sliding into the sea. The glaciers supporting the Larsen B are named Leppard, Flask, and Starbuck. Starbuck’s for the most part stable, but the other two, Leppard and Flask have accelerated their movement and have decreased in size due to warming weather. Sea levels may increase if the glaciers fall into the ocean.

    The study, The Evolving Instability Of the Remnant Larsen B Ice Shelf And Its Tributary Glaciers, was a collaboration between the US and Norway; authors: Ala Khazendar, Christopher P. Borstad, Bernd Scheuchl, Eric Rignot, and Helene Seroussi.

    Bulge Found On Pluto

    Some people have always thought there’s something fishy about [dwarf] planet Pluto. Not only is Pluto in tandem with its moon Charon, has four other moons, but now New Horizons mission discovers a mysterious bulge near the planet’s “north” pole.

    The following animated image was composed from a series of photos taken by New Horizons last April. The bulge can be seen as both bodies rotate.

    Dawn Arrives In Ceres Orbit

    Dawn Arrives In Ceres Orbit

    Dawn, JPL / NASA’s space probe, achieved orbit around planet Ceres this Friday, March 6, 2015 as it was programmed. The sapce caft had been sending clearer imagery of the [dwarf] planet Ceres since early this year. The probe started to slow down its speed to position itself around the orbit of Ceres.

    The best picture of Ceres had been taken by the Hubble Space Telescope years before Dawn reached the [dwarf] planet’s vicinity.

    It was early this year when NASA released photos taken with cameras onboard the space probe as it closed by the small planet Ceres.

    An unusual bright spot was rediscovered on Ceres in one of the pictures from Dawn. Further inspection would find another smaller bright spot as it shows the next image released last February 19, 2015

    Today Dawn is in orbit around the [dwarf] planet Ceres. The follwing image was released last March 01, 2015 by NASA. As the probe orbits Ceres, the lead team hopes to obtain more data and better resolution images that helps them explain what the bright spots on the planet are.
